In 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law. In ten short years, over 10,000 Native Americans were forced off their land and into Indian Territory, which is now the state of Oklahoma. Thousands of Native Americans lost their lives on the 1000-plus mile walk. This was known as the Trail of Tears.
